IRS Grants Automatic Extension for Taxpayers Affected by Hurricane Ian

Extended Deadline Applies to Both Individuals and Businesses

The extension applies to both individuals and businesses located in eligible counties in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

The original filing deadline of September 15, 2022, has been extended to February 15, 2023, for eligible taxpayers. This extension also applies to quarterly estimated income tax payments due on September 15th. The IRS urges affected taxpayers to file their returns electronically to expedite processing.

The following counties are eligible for the extension:

  • Florida: Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hardee, Hillsborough, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Okeechobee, Osceola, Polk, Sarasota, and Sumter
  • South Carolina: Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry, Jasper, and Williamsburg
  • North Carolina: Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Duplin, Jones, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Robeson, Sampson, and Wayne
  • Virginia: Accomack, James City, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Northampton, Poquoson, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and York
