April 18 Tax Deadline: How to File for an Extension

Need more time to file your taxes? Here's how to request an extension.

If you're not able to file your tax return by the April 18 deadline, you can request an extension of time to file. This will give you an additional six months to submit your return without incurring any penalties.

How to file for an extension

You can file for an extension online, by mail, or through a tax professional. If you file online, you can use the Free File program or a paid tax software package. If you file by mail, you must complete and submit Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File US Individual Income Tax Return.

Regardless of the method you choose, you must file your extension request by the April 18 deadline. You do not need to provide a reason for requesting an extension, but you may need to pay any taxes you owe by the original deadline.

If you file for an extension, you will have until October 17 to file your return. However, you should note that any taxes you owe are still due by the original April 18 deadline. If you do not pay your taxes by this deadline, you may be subject to penalties and interest.
